Research studies, including from faculty at Weill Cornell Medicine, shows that youth who engage in maladaptive or addictive use of social media or mobile phones are at greater risk of emotional or behavioral issues, including suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts. Join us for a virtual discussion on the research surrounding patterns of compulsive or “addictive” use, and how these patterns can include feeling unable to stop using a device, experiencing distress when not using it or using it to escape from problems. This session will also cover what warning signs to look for, how to talk about it, when to seek help, and other important issues.

Autistic youth have complex medical needs, which often require the care of a multidisciplinary team of providers from varied health care specialties. Lack of awareness and understanding of these needs, coupled with a lack of knowledge regarding the management of these health care issues, can result in disparities in the provision of health care services for autistic youth. Through participation in this conference, medical and health care providers can better understand the complex needs and management of this patient population, which will help to close the gap related to the provision of medical and behavioral services, as well as promote equity in health care for these individuals. The panel of providers includes specialists from the following disciplines: psychology, child neurology, sleep medicine, genetics, gastroenterology, speech-language therapy, behavioral therapy, nutrition, psychiatry, developmental pediatrics and family navigators. Providers will present information related to their specialty to provide background information and will discuss indications for referral to their particular specialty for further evaluation and provision of care.
